To all my law enforcement compadres...I need your assistance with some research my commander has tasked me with.Recently Arizona has passed the medical marijuana law (I have no idea why) and I would like to know from those states that also have the same laws in effect, how your agency has dealt with the issue. I would also like to hear from other Arizona agencies as well. If you could email me directly, your answers to the following questions, I would be forever grateful. 1.Do you have a policy that addresses medical marijuana?
2.Could you email me a copy? 3.How do you deal with a current employee who has medical marijuana issues? 4.What do you do from a background/pre-employment perspective as far as standards and screening are concerned? 5.Do you address this issue differently when it comes to sworn and civilian? 6.How do you address the issue of possession, growing, cultivating, etc. Thanks, Willis wdeatherage@scottsdaleaz.gov IP: Logged |

Willis;I have no answers for your questions- as I've been retired from LE too long. But, I thought you might want to address the use of synthetic marijuana in your policy as well(which presently is legal in many States). Bob IP: Logged |

We have the same law here in Maine, but I've never run into a candidate who was using it. It's still illegal under federal law, which is still a problem (I would think). I'd be interested in seeing your end product.IP: Logged |

I understand the state can pass the law but how could the agency not set their own policy still against usage? I'm waiting for the first law suit to be filed for discrimination from a person who wasn't hired because they have a medical marijuana exemption. I guess departments will have to change SOP's to say " No smoking the ganja three hours prior to or after shift, unless you have to for your medical reason cause we don't want the ADA on us". Amazing what this country is coming too.IP: Logged |

I will guess if an applicant was qualified to use "medical marijuana" there is likely a medical problem that could disqualify them from law enforcement service. IP: Logged |

kt: [quote}No smoking the ganja three hours prior to or after shift[/quote]OK, I get the 3 hours prior to shift thing, but what is the practical value of the no-spleef [sp?] policy after shift? Buster,Starbucks, Wal-Mart, 7-11, Costco.......You really don't even have to buy it. Just land at any airport in California and they give you a baggie when you get off the plane. Don't forget to save some peanuts for later! By the way, define "had". Happy New Year all! Ted [This message has been edited by Ted Todd (edited 12-31-2010).] IP: Logged |
